一个归天议员的家人无意中发现了议员的一件遗物——一卷8毫米的影片，里面居然有女孩被虐杀的全部进程，因而交给了一位私人侦察汤姆威勒（Nicolas Cage尼古拉斯?凯奇饰）观察真相。汤姆威勒原本安静的生活起头危机四伏。
汤姆威勒一步步破解真相的进程，亦是一步步堕入泥潭的进程。可是影片中陌生女子的受虐悲剧在他脑中挥之不去。良知促使他在凶恶的真相眼前变得无惧。
但认真相揭穿之时，人间的丑陋不胜得令汤姆威勒也堕入了惊骇……
