亚当离别厌倦已久撰写讣告的工作，重新泽西州来到纽约，以其激烈的消息认识和灵敏的社会嗅觉成了滚石杂志社的一位记者。加盟滚石后的初次使命，亚当就被马克派去采访约瑟夫·麦肯齐。麦肯齐是一位电脑商，因涉嫌做毒品买卖而被政府起诉，可亚当却把眼睛盯上了更具社会意义的“活动情缘”俱乐部。
亚当以不公然采访录音带为条件，成功的完成了对麦肯齐的独家采访。与此同时，对“活动情缘”俱乐部的采访却由于有氧练习顶级教练杰西的拒绝而停顿不大。但是，杰西未几就被亚当的帅气和性感所征服，并一步步把亚当领进了自己的生活空间。
为了逢迎政府的言论导向，马克在未收罗亚当答应的条件下将一篇“寻觅健美师长”的报道停止了违反原意的删改。刊发出的报道引发了俱乐部会员的激烈不满，杰西为此也对亚当发生了怨恨。荣幸的是，政府对麦肯齐的起诉由于亚当的对峙而被判无罪，此时的杰西也是以消除了对亚当的怨恨而敞开恋爱的大门，驱逐着亚当的归来。
