阿莱克斯(希斯·莱吉尔饰)是纽约一位年轻的神父，身为基督教徒却对基督教的陈旧很是不满，他希望经过尽力改变这类现状，成了教会里的叛逆人物。未几前，他的教员兼朋友:一位法国大使死了，尸身上却印有一个奥秘的宗教标志，上面还写着阿拉米语，阿莱克斯是以思疑法国大使的死是他杀，而且极能够隐藏着庞大诡计。悲愤之下，阿莱克斯决议辅佐负责此案的女警官玛拉(莎莲·苏珊雯 饰)观察此案，找出大使灭亡的幕后凶手。
与此同时，阿莱克斯将尸身上印有特别标志的线索送到了梵蒂冈，交给他的教员多米尼克神父，希望他可以破解这个奥秘。但教员并没有给他回答，未几后，阿莱克斯被召回罗马，在那边他仍然继续观察，他那时已经隐约感遭到大使之死和基督教有关。
一个偶然的机遇，阿莱克斯最密切的同事汤姆斯神父(马克·埃迪 饰)发现，大使的奥秘灭亡能够源自基督教中一种陈腐的传闻仪式。在现行教会及第行这类仪式的人，极能够是威廉姆(班诺·福曼 饰)——他的实在身份就是基督教传闻中的“食罪人”。
“食罪人”是在陈腐基督教中担任特别职位的人，他们自命为地球上的神，经过在教堂外举行某种仪式赦宥那些已经死去的人，洗去他们未反悔的罪恶，答应死去的人不因犯过邪恶而遭到赏罚——而这类仪式实在就是吃掉死者的尸身，更可怕的是，“食罪人”常常会为了赦宥某人的罪恶，在需要时对活人动手……
