◎简 介
故事发生在1972年美国一个叫洛克威尔的小镇。莱瑞德上校负责将战争中牺牲的兵士尸体护送回他们的故乡，并为他们在当地举行军事化葬礼。这一次，莱瑞德上校来到洛克威尔镇，并带回了军官格威特的尸体。
一对年老的黑人佳耦接待了莱瑞德，他们是格威特的怙恃。他们决议将格威特埋葬在小镇的墓地里，却遭到了当地很多居民和政府的否决，缘由就是格威特是一位黑人。面临一位豪杰在死后还要忍受人们的种族轻视，莱瑞德上校悲愤不已，他决心经过自己的气力改变这一切。莱瑞德经过一向支持格威特一家的麦考利斯特夫人熟悉了当地报纸的主编，经过尽力主编赞成给莱瑞德一些时候收集关于格威特生前的豪杰业绩，并把这些都刊登在报纸上，以此改变小镇居民对他的轻视。
莱瑞德上校来到了格威特生前地点军队，在对他的手下问话的进程中，莱瑞德发现一切的人都在赞美格威特的勇敢，但又似乎对他牺牲时的情形避而不谈。莱瑞斯上校感受这其中一定有什么工作，他甚至想到是格威特的手下设想将他杀戮。
最初接管莱瑞德问话的是兵士贝尔，当听说格威特死后连下葬的权利都被褫夺后，贝尔感应了深深的惭愧，他决议将真相告诉莱瑞德：在战役中，格威特已经号令贝尔向空军发出信号请求支援，但贝尔以为一个黑人的牢靠性是值得思疑的。因而他在请求空军支援的时辰改变了格威特定下的坐标，空军自然没能找到他们。其他兵士看到空军救济失利，便一样对格威特的带领才能和判定才能发生了思疑，以致在交火的进程中，看到格威特受伤却没有供给需要实时的救济。终极形成了格威特的牺牲。
工作的真相被报刊报道了出来，引发了极大颤动。格威特被授与了银质奖章，同时他也被破例埋葬在洛克威尔墓地中，而护送他到墓地的就是他的手下们。
