七岁小男孩艾伯特与母亲罗林相依为命，罗林是一个名为“梦幻马戏团”的演员，艾伯特从小便对魔术充满了好奇，对马戏团里的魔术大师安东尼更是崇拜有加。也因此，小小年纪的艾伯特便精于很多小戏法，而他的梦想就是成为一名伟大的魔术师。
一次意外的交通事故夺走了罗林的生命，而罗林生前在马戏团里的那些朋友，没有一个人知道有关艾伯特父亲的任何消息，仿佛在一瞬间，艾伯特便成了一个孤儿。尽管安东尼很喜欢聪明伶俐的艾伯特，但因为要巡回各地演出，常年漂泊在外，根本无暇照顾年幼的艾伯特，就在众人不知所措的时候，马戏团的法律顾问找到了罗林生前留下的一份档案，那上面记录着在不远的另一个城市，艾伯特有一个教母，名叫哈瑞克·弗朗克斯，档案上特别注明，如果有意外发生，希望哈瑞克能够收养艾伯特。
安东尼很快便联系上了哈瑞克，对于罗林的去世，哈瑞克深感悲痛，可当她得知罗林希望她抚养自己7岁的儿子时，顿时手足无措起来。哈瑞克经营着一家专卖餐厅旅馆用品的公司，性格散漫、行事直率的她多年来一直独自生活，凡事也都是独来独往，要和一个7岁的小男孩一起生活，对她来说无异于晴天霹雳。但最终，对与罗林一起度过的那段美好的童年回忆动摇了哈瑞克，她将艾伯特接到家中，并努力像个母亲一样帮他准备晚餐、洗澡水、衣服……
对于哈瑞克所做的一切，艾伯特似乎并不领情，从第一眼起，他便对身材魁梧、长相丑陋的哈瑞克充满了敌意，每天独自待在自己幻想的世界里。博格斯便是他幻想世界里的亲密友伴，除了艾伯特自己，没有人能看到博格斯的存在。他和博格斯一起聊天、画画、同吃同住……博格斯有时像朋友一样关心他，有时像父亲一下帮助他。一天，艾伯特看到报纸上的一则消息，得知“梦幻马戏团”要到大西洋城演出，于是他不顾博格斯的反对，背着哈瑞克独自来到了大西洋城。失去艾伯特的哈瑞克此时才感觉到这个小男孩已经在不知不觉中融入了自己的生活，她焦急地四处寻找，令人意外的是，哈瑞克的真诚让她也奇迹般地看到了博格斯，并从他那里知道了艾伯特的下落。而此时在大西洋城的艾伯特也想念着哈瑞克，在博格斯的帮助下，两人终于都说出了内心深处的真实感受。
