　　盖伊是澳大利亚某广播电台的消息记者，来到印尼首府雅加达停止消息采访。由于人生地不熟，在最初的时候里他很难获得实在的内幕消息。偶然地他与一位当地记者比利成为朋友。比利是一其中澳混血的侏儒，长于寒暄，和官场、交际界人士广有来往。为了拍摄的需要，盖伊可以让比利骑在自己的肩膀上停止摄影。由于两人的亲近配合，拍下了大量的有代价的大众活动排场的照片。比利还为盖伊先容了英国大使馆的女随员吉尔，二人未几成为情人。由于内战行将爆发，比利对自己的前途落空了信心，加上与盖伊的友谊出现了一些题目，又亲眼看到雅加达居民区一个儿童的短命，失望的比利带着鄙弃和搬弄的神气竣事了自己的生命。这让盖伊和吉尔很是难过，盖伊决议向吉尔妥协，他们一路乘飞机分开了印尼这个灾难深重的国家。
