　　影片按照林露德的第一部同名列传小说改编而来，历史上确有其人，报告了一个华人女子在18世纪美国西部淘金期间艰辛奋斗的故事。“千金”波莉·比米斯(Polly Bemis)原名纳顺·拉鲁（Lalu Nathoy），1853年诞生于中国华北地域中蒙鸿沟的一个农民家庭。为了生存，拉鲁的父亲被迫把她卖给了匪贼，换回两袋种子。后来在美国拉鲁再次被人估客以2500美圆卖给爱达荷州沃伦(Warren)镇的一个华人小酒店东。最初白人查理·比米斯用玩扑克牌赌博的法子从酒店老板手里赢得了她。受过杰出教育的比米斯是新英格兰名门以后，他给了波莉自在。未几，比米斯被一矿工用枪击中，是波莉用剃须刀把子弹挖出，救了他的人命。后来波莉和比米斯结了婚，两人在鲑鱼河(Salmon River) 边的峡谷底斥地了农场。波莉用她的中草药为孩子们治病，深受当地人们亲爱。波莉·比米斯于1933年在美国爱达荷州去世。
