　　电影报告了一个不为人知的故事。1933 年，一位野心勃勃的威尔士年轻记者加雷斯·琼斯（Gareth Jones）来到苏联观光，发现了共产主义乌托邦神话后耸人听闻的现实。由此他起头停止一项常规消息观察，但试图在政府袒护下挖掘乌克兰饥荒的真相很快酿成了生死攸关的摸索。
　　他的尽力不但遭到苏联检查机关的挫败，而且遭到对斯大林政权抱有好感的西方记者的阻止，这其中最著名的就是时任《纽约时报》莫斯科分部的总编辑沃特·杜兰蒂（Walter Duranty）。
　　在现实生活中，琼斯是第一个在西方媒体报道苏联 1932-1933 年大饥荒的记者。但由于很多常识份子对苏维埃政权持同神态度，他的报道并不受接待。那时隐瞒了大饥荒究竟的杜兰蒂也在尔后招致批评，他因对苏联的延续报道而获得的普利策奖也被《纽约时报》称为是“我们为之感应忸捏但可以做出诠释”（Guilty With an Explanation）的一个奖项。
