　　美国内战结束后五年，三场战争的退伍军官杰佛森凯尔基得上尉（汤姆·汉克斯 饰），现在以读报人的身份从一个小镇到另一个小镇，和当地居民分享世界各地的精彩新闻。他在德州的平原遇到乔韩娜（海伦娜·泽格尔 饰），一 个六年前被凯奥瓦印第安人掳走并被收养的十岁女孩。乔韩娜对她未曾体验过的世界充满敌意，而且被迫被送回她的阿姨和姨丈身边。基得上尉答应护送这女孩回到她依照法律应该属于的地方。他们必须在环境严苛的野外跋山涉水好几百英哩，而且这两人在寻找一个他们都可以称为家园的地方时，将面对来自人类和大自然的巨大挑战。
