　　　　伯恩德在位于德国汉堡的一间剧院当演员，不过他一直都只能演一些龙套角色。一天剧院的经理说服他参演《毒气员》，故事讲述了两个纳粹党员收集“不需要的人”并将他们直接在路上杀死。尽管能够出演主角，刚开始的排练就让伯恩德感到像是噩梦。导演弗兰克只有执导电影的经验，天分极高却也十分霸道，比如他执意让出演受害者和纳粹毒气员的演员分开排练。伯恩德的搭档马西斯是个趋炎附势的人，一心只想着高升。而伯恩德也完全不喜欢这出戏剧。在剧院外，伯恩德的生活也不好过：他的前任几乎不和他联系，法警追着他要钱，而他和自己的小儿子相处时间也少之又少。他的唯一慰藉是他和一个神秘的年轻女人的关系。本片是一部针对德国艺术和文化现状的政治讽刺剧，通过大量的黑色幽默，展示了一个人探寻内心世界的过程。
