◎简　　介
　　美国内战竣事的十年后，昔时的南北战争豪杰纳森（汤姆?克鲁斯 Tom Cruise）因无所作为而整天酗酒。一次偶然的机遇，他结识了来美做买卖的日本贩子。纳森的特出战绩令对方另眼相看。此时正值明治维新期间，日本天皇意欲练习一支现代化的作战军队，因而纳森被请到了日本。
　　日本很多军人都不接待纳森的到来，他们果断不愿抛弃传统的军人道精神，对将军人欧化非常反感。他们在首领乌吉奥（真田广之 饰）的率领下举刀叛逆，躲到了一条偏僻的小山村自立为政。天皇盛怒，派纳森率领他练习出来的现代化军队去围歼哗变军人。岂料皇军三军淹没，纳森亦成为了阶下囚……
