`Fast` Eddie Felson is a small-time pool hustler with a lot of talent but a self-destructive attitude. His bravado causes him to challenge the legendary `Minnesota Fats` to a high-stakes match, but he loses in a heartbreaking marathon. Now broke and without his long-time manager, Felson faces an uphill battle to regain his confidence and his game. It isn‘t until he hits rock bottom that he agrees to join up with ruthless and cutthroat manager Bert Gordon. Gordon agrees to take him on the road to learn the ropes. ◎简　　介

　　艾迪（保罗·纽曼 Paul Newman 饰）是一位身手高明的桌球赌博师，在一次合作剧烈的角逐中，艾迪败给了对手胖子（杰基·格黎森 Jackie Gleason 饰），失利带来的冲击让高慢十足的艾迪萎靡不振。一次偶然中，失意的艾迪在咖啡店里碰见了名叫莎拉（派珀·劳瑞 Piper Laurie 饰）美丽女子，两人很快坠入了爱河。

　　但是，莎拉的爱并没能让艾迪在挫败感中获获救赎，野心的火焰整天在艾迪的心中熄灭带来着疼痛与焦灼。一个名叫伯特（乔治·C·斯科特 George C. Scott 饰）的汉子找到艾迪，希望可以当他的掮客人。在两人的尽力之下，艾迪终究获得了求之不得的成功，可与此同时，他深爱着的莎拉却挑选了分开。
