　　迈可正寻觅一个万能遥控器，一个奥秘身份的老板莫蒂（ 克里斯托弗·沃肯 饰）给了他一个。当迈可回抵家尝试利用后才发觉了这个遥控的奇异功用：他可以操纵这个遥控器控制自己的生活时候，这对他来说是件极为兴奋的工作，他可以逃过那些烦琐的事，为所欲为到达自己想要的时段。
　　直到有一天，这个遥控器不再受他的控制了，他的生活变得整齐不齐，时候敏捷向前走，而他也错过了很多重要的工作：他敏捷的成为公司的高层、他的妻子分开了他与他人成婚、父亲去世、儿子成婚等等，他才后悔自己故意错过的工具，而他也来到了弥留之际，他尽力要警告儿子不要重蹈覆辙，多把时候留给家人……
