　　影片以1860年意大利的西西里岛为布景，经过萨里纳亲王这个核心分子的心路过程，反应出头临如火如荼崭新时代的到来，身处天翻地覆的社会变化的浩荡潮水傍边，原有权贵和贵族是以而衰败这一无法而必定的命运。
　　萨利纳亲王一家原本过着安静的生活。但随着大势的急剧变化，亲王的外甥唐克雷迪投靠正在西西里登陆的青年意大利党人加里波军队。返回故乡，唐克雷迪对市长塞达拉的女儿安杰莉卡一见钟情，两民气心相印，未几便订婚了。塞达拉答应给女儿一份丰富的嫁妆，这样便拯救了萨利纳行将衰败的家属，而塞达拉也因能跟大贵族结亲而洋洋得意。尔后，西西里岛停止了全民投票，成果分歧赞成合并意大利。都灵派来了使者，约请萨利纳作为名门贵族的代表，加入议会工作，但被萨利纳拒绝了。新政府没有给这个沉睡了两千多年的岛屿带来任何变化，出格是加里波在败北后，巴勒莫上流社会的生活又规复了旧貌，贵族们频频举行舞会，光荣劫后余生。
