　　1914 年炎天，身世于英国有产阶级家庭的年轻女子维芙去造访英国牛津默顿大学的美国青年研讨生和现代派墨客艾略特（简称汤姆）。他们一见钟情，很快就成婚了。汤姆和维芙在伦敦过着简朴的生活。她对丈夫的写作非常支持，不但提出点窜定见，还充任了他的女秘书。由于工作过度劳顿，维芙病倒了，汤姆经常发现她由于服药过量而堕入昏迷状态。这对青年佳耦在一路度过了最甜蜜幸运的时光。但随着汤姆的声誉和职位在不竭进步，维芙对他发生了匹敌心理，他们的豪情日渐冷淡。1922 年，汤姆的诗集《荒原》出书了。在一次晚宴上，英国著名女作家伍尔芙居然当着维芙的面向汤姆倡议：假如维芙可以搬走，汤姆将好过很多了。后来汤姆感应越来越难以接近维芙，一位医学家告诉汤姆，维芙得的是一品种似“精神庞杂”的神经平衡症，因而他们将维芙禁闭起来。维芙于1947 年6月22日死于精神医院。
