本片的情节来历于一个实在的故事，一位圣地亚哥的男人履历了一系列没法诠释的奇异事务，一个怪动机致使他残暴的用刀杀戮了自己的母亲。赫尔佐格暗示：“我一向以来都想拍一部可骇电影，可是不想表示为鲜血淋漓的斧头和铁链那样。而希望观众从中感遭到一种莫名的恐惧。”
