简　　介
　　女作家海伦（安妮·班克罗夫特 Anne Bancroft 饰）住在纽约，她经常为自己不能买到所需的珍稀图书而沮丧。偶然，她在一本杂志上发现一则来自一家英国旧书店刊登的广告，便抱着试探的心态给这家位于伦敦查令十字街84号的马克书店老板写了求书单。很快，马克书店给了她一个超乎设想的欣喜：她买到了自己一向苦苦寻觅的珍品书籍，而且还获得了弗兰克（安东尼·霍普金斯 Anthony Hopkins 饰）对书籍珍本的诚意保举。自此，两个酷爱书籍的人起头了长达20年的手札交往。海伦不但向弗兰克求购难寻书籍，还与他分享自己的念书心得。两人相互交换文学概念，批评名家作品。弗兰克奔走四周为海伦采办书籍珍本，海伦则从美国寄来丰厚食品，为书伙计工们减缓因英国实物配给制而酿成的食品匮乏困难。两人经过延续手札交往成为精神至好。海伦一向想前往伦敦造访弗兰克，却由于各类突发情况而未能如愿。直到她收到弗兰克归天消息的手札，她才终究坐上了飞往英国的飞机，而此时，查林十字街84号的马克书店却面临着被拆迁……
