　　故事讲述户田家本是一个大家族，一向意气风发，可是当一家之主病逝后，整个家族便起了很大的变化。妻子为他的身后事日夜奔波劳碌，处理过遗产之后，家道中落，儿子要跑到中国的天津工作，母亲带着最小的女儿被迫搬往各子女的家中居住，结果母亲跟媳妇日渐不和，家庭的凝聚力随着父亲的猝死而逐渐瓦解，母女最后被迫躲到海边破屋，感到无限的唏嘘与孤寂。
　　本片是《我们要爱母亲》的变奏，故事同以父亲逝世做起点，但铺陈出另一种感情与关怀。
　　该片为小津最成熟作品之一，处理三代同堂的细碎关系笔触敏感。豪门开场意气风发，对比片末处境苍凉，幻灭感觉尤其真实与强烈。尽显了小津强烈而成熟的个人风格。被日本「电影旬报」选为年度最佳电影。
